3rd Task: Representation of Gender
Analysis of the the Primeval sequence gender stereotypes on how camera, editing, mise-en-scene and sound represent Gender.
Superiority and Domination:
- In the first section the blond woman is more dominant as she is the one driving the tractor and saving the man from the tiger.
- At 3:38 the woman is more dominant than the man as she is the more threatening one but as when the man gets angry and pulls a gun to the woman he becomes dominant as he makes her fall to the ground and makes her look up to him
- When the other characters come into the ending scene the men are more superior to the woman as they are in front of her and have bigger weapons than the woman. This is to shows the men are stronger than the woman.
Dismemberment:
I don't think this clip has this in it.
Clowning and Exaggeration:
- At the begging the woman is angry at the man and storms away into a car, this shows the woman doesn't want to quit on something and gets angry but the man insists to do so calmly. when he is told to let her go and he does this expresses that he isn't going to change his mind and don't understand why she is so fussed about it.
- In the last scene the woman becomes a 'damsel in distress' this is exaggerated as she falls to the gowned , and when she comes up complains about her coat. This is exaggerated because she is making her self look like she cares more about her clothes and appearance than being killed.
Camera shot, Angle and Position
An over the shoulder shot is used first to show the woman having a conversation with the man, this is to show both expression of each character.
Then a medium close up and tracking is used on the man walking away, to show his emotion and detail of the action also to show that the woman is stomping away.
A long shot and follow of the camera is used so the tractor can be seen and the dominant woman is seen and where it is located at.
a medium close up and zoom is then used to show the character planting the rock, then it turns into a close up of the rock, so audience now what has just been put there, but they don't know why it has been put there. A mid shot is used on the woman in the digger to show her emotion, so the audience can tell she is looking for something.
A close up and zoom on the hand in the dirt is used so audience can see it and feel suspicious as why it is there.
This represents the Gender as theses shots are usually used in thrillers to give out different feeling and emotions.
Mise en Scene
Tractor
Dead body (Hand)
Saper tooth tiger
Shot gun
Guns
Shovel
Dogs
Theses reprosent the gender as there are sharp objects guns and dangerous things. Thrillers generally use this instead of over the top objects as these objects are calm but can be dangerous and they give of suspense if they are used.
Sound
The music stars of calm with an theatrical instrumental, It then starts to build up becoming louder. As the man puts the rock on the floor the music calm but passy giving the feeling of tension and mystery. It then goes back to the tractor scene where the music goes back to original sound this makes the audience wounder why that just happerened. When the hand is found a totally different sharp sound is used and the music stops. This gives the audience shock and more mystery of why the hand is there. Then the music and sound stop completely so that the audience can here that something is coming throw the forest. This give suspense and tension as scary music comes on what brings attention to the Tiger. Rassy music comes on this gives more of the feel that he is being chased after. When the tiger gets stop the music dies down and becomes slow. In the conversation the music stops but sounds are used.
I learned really how to break down a sequence in detail and explain and anylise it with detail.
